A BIM Execution Plan as a foundation for flow
A BIM execution plan should make clear what information will be used for, who needs it and how it should be delivered. In this presentation, Sindre Gundersen explains how a BIM Execution Plan, often shortened to BEP, can support flow through project phases and into operations.
Start with the decision to be made
An early design example shows the approach: define the purpose and objectives, draw the information flow and then specify the necessary properties. Scans and models should provide an overview of existing conditions, while areas and quantities should support cost assessments.
The table in the presentation specifies requirements for areas by floor and room, with defined objects and units. A model can therefore look complete without containing what the calculation needs.
Information that outlasts the project
Gundersen distinguishes between the project's information model and the information the owner needs for management, operation, maintenance and use. A diagram shows how model information could connect to sensors and other systems. It describes a target for further work.
Watch the video for a practical starting point for clarifying BIM deliverables: start with a simple information flow that participants understand, and develop the plan as needs become clearer.
