Contech #19: The possibilities of barcodes
What does it take for information to follow a building product from ordering to operations? In Contech #19 from January 2021, the speakers show how product identification, digital order confirmations and earlier clarification of requirements can improve continuity in the value chain.
Identify the product and check the order
Knut Mathisen from GS1 Norway explains the relationship between identification, data capture and sharing. GTIN identifies the product, while a serial number can distinguish an individual item from other identical products. A test order from NorDan illustrates how identifiers can be used for made-to-order windows.
Frode Ødegård from XL-BYGG Dale Malo demonstrates ordering from an estimate, exchanging messages through Logiq and electronic order confirmation. Cancelled items, replacement products and new freight charges become visible on order lines. The example shows why checking the total alone is not enough: a lower total may mean something is missing.
Clarify door properties earlier
Sindre Gundersen from Angvik Utvikling follows up on the door work from Contech #16 and a pilot course at NTNU. A process map shows where clarifications stall. The proposal is to distinguish requirements the building owner can standardise early from choices the user should make later. The aim is less variation and better opportunities for reuse.
Fredrik Moger presents Moment NTNU, and Celine Berggreen-Clausen from Smart Innovation Norway gives a Smart Molde update. Several initiatives are at the investigation or proposal stage. The practical advice from the meeting is to test a complete electronic workflow on a small scale before expanding it.
